The fastest weekday NJ Transit trains from Princeton Junction reach New York Penn Station in just under an hour, but plenty of trips take longer. A 2023 Daily Princetonian review of NJ Transit schedules found one morning train leaving Princeton Junction at 8:20 a.m. and arriving at Penn Station at 9:16 a.m. The average trip from the Princeton area to New York ran about an hour and 25 minutes.

For families relocating here for a New York job, a few details make a big difference:

  1. Express versus local. The station is on NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor Line, and the express trains are the ones that save real time. Check the schedule for the hours you’ll actually ride.

  2. Amtrak is an option. Amtrak’s Northeast Regional and Keystone trains also stop at Princeton Junction. They cost more but can be quicker.

  3. Parking. The station has about 4,100 parking spaces, but permits and waitlists vary by lot, so ask early.

  4. The Dinky. A 2.7-mile shuttle line connects Princeton Junction to downtown Princeton.

  5. Where you live matters. West Windsor and Plainsboro neighborhoods near the station make the morning shorter than a home farther out in Hopewell or Robbinsville.

Many buyers end up choosing between a shorter commute and more house for the money. That’s why it helps to time the drive to the station from each neighborhood you’re considering, at rush hour.
