Start by measuring your new home and deciding what's coming with you, then sell, give or donate the rest in stages over a few weeks instead of trying to clear everything the week before you move.
Here's a practical order that works for a lot of empty nesters in Princeton Junction:
Measure first. Get a floor plan of your new home and measure the rooms. A sofa that's perfect in a family room may not fit a smaller condo or a 55+ home.
Offer pieces to family. Give your kids and grandkids a deadline to claim what they want. After that date, it's fair game.
Sell the pieces with real resale value. Solid wood dining sets, quality bookcases and good outdoor furniture often sell well on local marketplaces. Take clear photos and price to move.
Donate what's in good shape. Many charities and resale shops accept furniture, and some will pick it up. Call ahead because rules on upholstered pieces and mattresses vary.
Know the curbside limits. West Windsor's trash pickup through Waste Management accepts only one to two bulk items per pickup, and mattresses larger than a twin must be folded, tied and fully wrapped in plastic. Appliances, pianos and patio furniture aren't accepted at the curb.
For a big cleanout, bring in help. A junk removal service or a bagster can save weeks if you're clearing a garage or basement.
Keep what you'll stage with. If you're selling, hold on to a few good pieces until after photos and showings.
